Theme-based learning
Learning at Honey Monsters is built around yearly themes. The themes are designed to support children's all-round development and their acquisition of English in natural, inspiring learning situations.

How does theme-based learning work?
Main themes are chosen for each kindergarten year, and daily activities are built around them. The themes feature in morning circles, play and activity centres, outings, crafts and music. Through the themes, the children learn new English words and concepts naturally in everyday situations.
The themes ensure that the language used in the kindergarten is varied and that activities differ from year to year. Varied and suitably challenging themes also inspire our staff to develop new, child-led ideas. When putting a theme together, we gather ideas from the children and build on their interests.
Over the years, we have explored themes such as:
- Around the World – we focused on internationalism
- I'm an Artist – we developed visual arts and the connection between music and language immersion
- Beyond the Curtain – we worked on drama
- Let's Play – we developed our play environment
- Together – we focused on playing together
- Good Today – Better Tomorrow – we reflected on sustainable development
Around the World
The children explore different countries, cultures, languages and traditions. The theme encourages international understanding and curiosity about the world.
Art and creativity
Visual art, crafts, drama and creative expression run through the whole year. The children learn to express themselves in many different ways.
Music and movement
A weekly music playschool run by Musiikkiopisto Avonia. There is also the option of joining a high-quality dance class (Pilates Atelje / Anu Raita).
Nature and the environment
We go on outings to nearby parks and explore natural phenomena through the seasons. Sustainable development is part of our everyday life.
Enriching language
Theme-based learning supports the acquisition of English in many ways. Vocabulary is learnt in natural situations through the themes.
Music and dance
All of our children take part in a weekly music playschool run by Musiikkiopisto Avonia. Music is an important part of language immersion – through songs, children pick up English words and phrases naturally.
In addition, children can join a high-quality dance class led by Anu Raita (Pilates Atelje) once a week for an extra fee.
